Joe Topping Photography

Documentary Wedding Photographer

Newtown, Powys, Wales

About Me
I’m Joe, a documentary wedding and elopement photographer based in Newtown, Powys. I work in a natural, unposed style (capturing the day as it naturally unfolds). I like to let my couples do their own thing! rather than directing them.

What I do – I photograph small weddings and elopements. My approach is hands-off: minimal posing, no stage-managed moments, just honest reportage of the day as it unfolds. The result is a set of images that actually feel like being there.

Where I work – Based in Newtown, I primarily cover weddings across Powys, and I’m happy to travel further afield in Wales and the surrounding counties for the right couple.

Who I work best with – I tend to be the best fit for couples who think of photography as art rather than a checklist – people who’d rather have their day quietly recorded than choreographed, and who trust me to get on with it whilst they enjoy their time with family and friends.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is documentary wedding photography? It means photographing the day as it naturally happens, rather than directing or staging shots. You get real moments and genuine reactions, not a series of posed set-ups. Best for couples who don’t want their wedding to be too formal.

Do you pose photos? Rarely. I stay in the background and let the day unfold, only stepping in for a few natural group shots if needed – for example: signing of the register, family portraits, cake cutting, etc.

How far do you travel? I’m based in Newtown and mainly work across Powys, but I do travel further afield in Wales and neighbouring counties for the right couple.

How far in advance should we book? As soon as you have a date, ideally. Small weddings and elopements can book up quickly, especially in peak season.

How much do you charge? My starting rate is £750 but it depends what coverage you need (ceremony-only, half-day, full-day, custom). Most couples end up spending around £1100 with me.
